Have you ever considered driving your car around in reverse? Imagine using your rearview mirror and navigating backward down the road! I know it sounds crazy, but some of us get stuck on this course going through life.
Think about the windshield. Of course, the windshield is wide and probably the most important piece of glass in your car. If your windshield is dirty or your view is blocked, you have no vision! You cannot go forward without being able to see where you are going. There is no way to maneuver a vehicle properly without looking through the windshield.
Consider, also, the rear view mirror. It is small and placed in just the right position to see behind you. The side view mirrors are similarly placed, just in the right position for you to scan for obstacles. These mirrors are for reflection, using them helps your peripheral vision, but you don't use them as your primary source.
Sometimes we get stuck looking behind us. We revel in the past or wallow in decisions made that are history. We cannot change these things. We need to check the mirrors for reflection and be grateful for our past. We can celebrate victories, learn from our mistakes and be willing to move forward.
As we move into the holiday season, be encouraged. The future is as wide open as your windshield! Check your mirrors and move forward.
Philippians 3:13-14 NIV
Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Ggrrr!
Sigh.
It's one of those days that I need to heed my own advice. I have heard myself complaining and grumbling. As a Pastor's wife, I cannot even tell you how many times I have said any number of these 'wise' words in attempt to encourage and lift wounded spirits, including my own!
Love God, love others.
We are saved to serve, not saved to sit.
We worship an audience of One, it doesn't matter what 'everyone' else is doing.
I know it seems like only a few do the work of many, but we still do it for Jesus!
Don't let someone else's poor attitude take you down too!
You can only be responsible to speak and live truth, you cannot be responsible for another's choice.
Think about the intentions of the person, I'm sure they didn't mean any harm.
Sometimes the best response is none at all.
In the Old Testament book of Exodus, Moses was leading the people of Israel out of slavery from Egypt. During that time of wandering in the desert, the Lord provided for every need of His people. Yet, they still grumbled and complained. The Hebrew word used for 'grumble' actually means to lodge, stop over, pass the night, to abide. Wow...so grumbling stops the action of moving forward. When we grumble or complain, we cease being effective in our walk with God.
We are all guilty. But we can start fresh! We can stop grumbling and start praising God for His provision. It's almost time for Thanksgiving....make a list. Be grateful.
I'm speaking to myself today, but maybe you need to hear this word too.
I have grumbled long enough. I wonder what I will become if I pray and praise instead of grumble and complain.
God provides. Be willing to receive and praise Him.

Remember who you are.
Remember who you are.
I am not the first one to string these words together, even though we have been using the meaning of this phrase in our home for years. After I read these words from a book recently, I thought, yes, that's it....this is what we want to live.
It can mean a multitude of things.....
To our kids-
you are a child of God
you are a son or daughter
you are a grandkid
you are a student and a friend
you are a preacher's kid!
To Brian and me-
child of God
husband or wife
parent
son and daughter
ministry kids
pastor or wife
shepherd and teacher
friend, confidant
counselor
(this is not an exhaustive list!)
But it also means....and most importantly...
you represent God
you represent each other, our family
you represent your workplace, your employer or employees.....
and the list goes on.
Now, hang on....I am NOT saying that you are responsible for all of those people and they are responsible to you, just that by your relationships, you represent each other. Obviously, people are human and we are messy. This is understandable. We don't say this to pressure ourselves to put on a front or be phony.
I'm sure sometimes we would like to say to each other, 'don't go out and do anything stupid and embarrass me!!' But instead of saying that in our family, we chose to be intentional by talking about how to be smart and make the wise choice.
When you step out into the world and we are apart from each other, how do you want to portray your faith and your family? By talking through these things before we are in difficult situations, we keep ourselves from making unwise choices. As we go out the door from one another at home, we often say, 'Remember who you are.' It's simply a reminder to be wise and represent well, for all of us.
In the Old Testament, when a covenant was made, the parties agreed by a sacrifice that if one broke the covenant, death would come to him. Likewise, they understood in that covenant relationship that God would be watching over them. This was not meant to be a protective watch over, but a covenant keeping eye.
One Biblical example is the relationship between Jacob and Laban, found in Genesis 31. This is undoubtedly a relationship of mistrust. When a covenant is made between them, God is their witness and a heap of stones is set up as a memorial. It's a great story and I challenge you to read and study it for yourself.
Genesis 31:49-50 NAS
and Mizpah, for he said, “May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from the other. “If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us, see, God is witness between you and me.”
The word 'mizpah' means to be a watchtower. God is a witness, a watchtower...did you know, He always is? You are not hiding anything from Him.
I want to challenge you and encourage you, remember who you are. When you walk out of the presence of those you love, and to be totally honest, even those you don't....who do you represent and how well do you represent them?
Mizpah...may God watch between you and me while we are apart from each other.
Remember who you are.

'But God!'
Spend some time with elementary school kids and you will hear every excuse that ever was offered! Someone else is always to blame. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard students say 'but...but...but' followed by a myriad of excuses.
I hate to admit this, but I can think of many, many times in my life when God has been nudging me to do something and my reply was, 'but God....' followed by some excuse. I wonder what great thing may have happened if I had just obeyed Him instead of trying to justify my reason for disobedience.
Have you ever done that? Maybe you feel pulled in one direction or compelled to involve yourself in something....whether it's related to relationships, parenting, ministry or other situations. The problem is that you keep putting it off, telling yourself, 'it's not for me,' or ' I am not called to that,' or my favorite excuse, 'I am not equipped to lead that.'
I am here to tell you, if God calls you to it, He will see you through it!
The other day during a worship service, we were singing Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone). I had been pondering and searching my Bible for these words, 'But God.'
The last verse suddenly hit me.....
the earth shall soon dissolve like snow
the sun forbade to shine
but God who calls me here below
will be forever mine.
But God!! He was here before I came into this world and He will be here long after I am gone. He has been taking situations and retelling HiStory all along! But God....
I've found over 40 references of 'but God' in the Word. Here are just a few.
Job 33:28 But God stepped in and saved me from certain death. I’m alive again!
Once more I see the light!
Psalm 54:4 But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive!
Luke 16:15. Then He said the them, 'You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God.'
Romans 6:23 But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Ephesians 2:4-7 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Don't let the 'but God' in your life be the excuse for not obeying what He has called you to do. Instead, let Him finish that sentence working out His will through you.
Be encouraged and don't lose heart, God never gives excuses, and He is always faithful. Be faithful to Him.
Lord Jesus, take my excuses and transform me into Your tool. Use me to reach people and do Your will. Amen.

Give Up!
It's so simple.
It requires surrender.
The decision is made and then the action follows.
I'm talking about faith.
Once you decide you believe in God, you take the step to follow Him. You surrender. Recognize you are a sinner. You are in need a Savior. Committing yourself to Him.
Most of the time, we hesitate to surrender all at once. It's like we give Him this piece and then that. Maybe we even think, 'let me give Him this part of my life and I'll see how He does.'
It humors me, only because I speak from experience. This feeling and I go way back, I know it personally. Before I turned over all of my life, I had to be involved in every detail. Like micromanaging my own life! It makes me exhausted now to think about it. Running around trying to be in charge of everything, whew. Where was my faith? Did I seriously think I could do a better job with my life and everyone in it?
I have always had the knowledge in my head. Growing up in church and with a Christian family, I had been taught. Until I made that faith my own, I couldn't possibly know all the plans God had for me. Even now, I don't know all the future holds, but I trust in the One who holds it.
God has proven Himself faithful to me. I have trusted Him with every detail of my life. I am confident that He will prove to be the same trustworthy God in your life.
Be encouraged, God's plans are far bigger and better than you can dream or imagine.
Ask God to take you, every single detail.
Life may not be easier, but there is a peace that you will not be able to explain.
When you feel the need to control life's circumstances, pray.
Ask God to take care of it instead.
Then, take a deep breath and exhale.
Call on Him. Trust Him. He will give you what you need each day.
Give up and give it all to Him. He's big enough.
1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 NRSV
May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.

Parenting......
(Disclaimer....I am not an doctor, family counselor, or expert of any kind. I am just a parent.)
Parenting is very difficult. I'm not going to lie. I can think of no other job on earth that has the ability to take you from the heights of joy to the depths of sorrow or heartbreak......sometimes in the same minute!
Brian and I have tried to be intentional parents. We began consistently discipling our kids when they were very young. Sometimes we do well. Sometimes we mess up. We talk to our kids a whole lot, even when they were tiny. We always explain, probably way more than necessary. My grandmother, Maureen, used to tell me, 'You are talking your kids to death!'
One thing I have told our kids regularly is, 'I am not your friend, I am your mother.' This might seem harsh, but we sincerely believe it is our responsibility to parent our kids, not befriend them.
Parenting in the noun form is defined as 'a person who brings up and cares for another.' Parent is also a verb meaning 'to be or act as the parent of.' Parenting is a verb, it requires action!
My daughter and I have been talking quite a bit lately. I love this. I'm still working hard to be the non-freaker outer kind of mom. (I did learn a valuable lesson from veteran mom, Shelly Miles, early on not to gulp the oxygen out of the room when confronted with one of the tough ones.) We talk about anything she wants, even the hard stuff. Sometimes, I don't have the answers. That's ok. I want her to know that it's important to ask the questions. It is great to have this kind of relationship, but it hasn't happened overnight. We have spent Katie's 15 years of life not only parenting, listening and loving; but also correcting, disciplining and guiding. It's our privilege as her parents to have the opportunity to speak truth into her life; even when its uncomfortable.
We don't want to be her friend. I think of friends as peers or people who like to hang out together, but family....they know everything there is to know about you and love you anyway!
The parent-child relationship is somewhat designed to end in a way. Once kids grow to be adults, maybe even parents of their own kids, the parent-child relationship takes on a different form. This relationship is like no other. I like to think of parenting as raising adults. Everything they need to know about being an adult comes from us!
Parenting takes strength. Some days my heart breaks for what my kids hear, see and feel. I don't want them to go through it! Especially during these turbulent teenage years. The world is cold. People are mean. We can't cushion every fall. We can't dry every tear. We can't rescue them from every hurt. We can be there with a band-aid and a hug. We can offer Kleenex and a kiss. We can throw a life preserver. This is what we do.
It's our job to help navigate, especially through the tough stuff. Sometimes it seems like the kid might drown, but then, just in time, she grabs the ring. She's going to have to do some swimming, but you help pull her in. And if you're me, you are talking her to death while reeling.
I'm sure you have great parenting advice. I write from the little bit of experience I have with the 2 entrusted to us. Whatever your experience, encourage someone. Did I mention, parenting is hard? Not one of us has all the answers. We need each other.
Listen, love and pray. Not necessarily in that order.

Proverbs 1:8-9 NLT
My child, listen when your father corrects you.
Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
What you learn from them will crown you with grace
and be a chain of honor around your neck.
Ephesians 6:1-3 NLT
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”

Who's Driving?
As the mother of a 15 year old, I'm sitting in the passenger seat quite a bit lately. I don't really like it. I like to be in control. I'm sure God is teaching me a lesson.
As I am reading the Bible today, I came across this scripture:
'Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?" ' Matthew 16:24-26 MSG
Timely wisdom for a student driver's mom. As we drive along, I am constantly giving instruction. 'Stay in the middle of the lane, slow down, use your turn signal, brake, brake, BRAKE!' There are many teachable moments. Katie is a good listener, but she is a teenager, so sometimes she does kinda think she knows everything!
How are you doing with letting Jesus be the driver? I know from personal experience, it's a struggle to let Him lead. When we try to control situations, manipulate them to go in the direction we want them to, we end up making a huge mess. We want to stay in control because it's all about us. Did you ever consider that He knows more than we can possibly know about every circumstance?
Remember the story of Abraham and Sarah. Sarah tried to manipulate the circumstances and provide an heir to Abraham. God already had a plan for Isaac to be born as Abraham's son. He didn't need Sarah to step in. (You can read this story in Genesis 16.) Sarah ended up making a mess.
Believe me, God's provision is greater than we can ever imagine!
' "I don't think the way you think. The way I work is not the way you work." God’s Decree. “For as the sky soars high above earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think." ' Isaiah 55:8-9 MSG
Before you jump in and navigate your way through life, ask Him to lead.
Let Him be the driver. His directions are the best.
